Its vision is to create a cultural shift by shining a light on the impact of boarding school - becoming a beacon of hope so every former boarder feels safe, heard and understood. We are delighted to announce that Boarding School Concern and LSBU’s Boarding School Research Hub have set up a knowledge-sharing partnership, building on our shared commitment to establish a robust evidence base to inform and guide service provision, sector practices and policy for the boarding school sector.</image:title>

      <image:caption>Survivorship bias occurs when we focus on individuals or entities that have made it through a process, while ignoring those who did not. A classic example dates back to World War II. Losing plane after plane, the US Air Force needed to reinforce their fighter planes to keep more in the sky. Engineers were about to reinforce the red dotted areas that matched bullet holes on returning aircraft. Statistician Abraham Wald famously advised otherwise - the engineers were guilty of Survivorship Bias. His insights helped win the war.</image:caption>

Nor can we understand the ways in which those who fail to thrive are harmed, and what factors influence those outcomes. Our research hub aims to measure the many different outcomes from boarding school - the good and the bad - so society can make sound, evidence-based judgements on the merits of choosing a boarding school education as a proxy for home.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Acknowledging the different starting places and experiences across the teams, we set the scene with our ‘Retrofit 101’ briefing. We outlined some organisational fundamentals, such as the contrast between pricing, planning, and delivering retrofit v ‘business as usual’ works (repairs and maintenance) We then surfaced the issues inherent in the retrofit grant structure - stop/start funding, compressed timelines, the uncertainty of stock condition. We shared our insight that many other social housing providers reported similar issues - disruption to business as usual, top-down pressure, onerous compliance demands - and it had taken a toll. This new perspective diffused any notions of blame, and created a safe space for the teams to open up about their shared experience and acknowledge past pain points.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The council implemented a range of immediate and medium-term recommendations that emerged from the Ghosts &amp; Gaps process, which lead to smoother programme delivery and reduced internal conflict when the SHDF funding landed. Whilst we were able to guide some strong ‘quick fixes’ the Ghosts &amp; Gaps workshop also exposed some deeper systemic issues, prompting Lambeth to commission further research into the longer-term integration of retrofit and asset management across the Borough. This forward-thinking approach - informed by their early Ghosts &amp; Gaps work - will ensure the Borough has a joined-up, systems-informed approach to maintaining social housing whilst scaling up retrofit to meet ambitious net zero and resident well-being targets.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Meeting the UK’s climate, energy, and economic goals will require the large scale retrofit of most of Britain’s homes. As well as making them warmer and more energy efficient, retrofit at scale will deliver significant co-benefits for the nation’s health, energy security and economic prosperity. The task is enormous, and we are ill-prepared. The construction sector needs to increase delivery rates from c250,000 retrofits per year to 1.5 million per year by 2035 - that’s a six-fold increase across all housing tenures. This means the UK is going to need a correspondingly rapid expansion of a skilled retrofit workforce - presenting a national challenge and a huge opportunity for job creation, community benefit, and economic growth across the UK. The National Retrofit Hub (the Hub) is a nonprofit organisation working with the industry to enable this mission-critical delivery. The Hub has convened six thematic working groups, each chaired by recognised industry experts: 1) Warm, Health Net Zero, 2) Supply Chain Products &amp; Solutions, 3) Workforce Growth &amp; Skills Development, 4) Finance, 5) Delivery Approaches and 6) Driving Uptake.</image:caption>
